You’ll help transform lives by enabling autistic children to communicate effectively, assisting adolescents in overcoming speech dysfluency in classrooms, and supporting stroke survivors in resuming daily activities.

Since 1965, our speech-language pathology program has maintained the highest professional standards. Our comprehensive program emphasizes evidence-based practice, teamwork, and interdisciplinary approaches to complex communication disorders. You’ll collaborate with faculty and clinical supervisors on campus through the state-of-the art on-campus Speech-Language Center and at affiliated world-renowned educational and medical institutions throughout the region.

Unique Features
  • During the first semester, you’ll complete prerequisite bridge coursework by selecting at least three of five available 3-credit courses. Academic advisors will help you choose which courses to take based on your remaining requirements. You may take up to all five courses if necessary. To advance to the fall semester, students must earn a grade of “B” or better in all bridge courses.
  • Experience real-world patient interaction with our on-campus speech-language clinic.
  • After graduation, students are eligible for their state educator licensure requirements for speech-language pathology and to begin their clinical fellowship. Prospective and current students can visit the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association website, which provides state-specific information regarding licensure throughout the United States.

Experiential Learning

SLP students complete four semesters of clinical experience. In your first semester of Clinic (Clinic 1), you’ll engage in meaningful clinical experiences under the guidance of highly skilled supervisors in the on-campus Speech-Language Center where faculty and students provide pro bono services to the Charlotte population. Individuals of all ages from surrounding communities come to the center for diagnostic and therapeutic services.

In Clinics 2 through 4, students work multiple days a week as student clinicians in a variety of on- and off-campus settings.

Consistent with ASHA guidelines, both on-campus and off-campus clinical assignments provide you with hands-on experience evaluating and/or treating children and adults with various diagnoses, disorders, and impairments, such as language, cognitive-linguistic, and swallowing disorders. While many of our external clinical sites are accessible by public transportation, not all are. Consequently, you must have access to a car during the semesters you are enrolled in Clinics 2 through 4.
