Charlotte Weather?

Northeastern University spent years researching and planning for its graduate campus in the heart of Charlotte. The city’s growing economy, diverse population and booming job market secured Charlotte as the home of the first graduate campus. But I think there was one other factor that might have been a bit of a draw to this region…the weather!

As great as our Charlotte weather can be, the quick shifts in temperature these last few months have not made it easy to plan outdoor time much in advance. In an effort to find some good “last minute” options for those “in-between” days ahead, here is a short list of fun outings within an hour’s drive of Charlotte.

The US National Whitewater Center, with everything from rafting to ziplining and hiking, also hosts live music events and festivals.

History comes alive at both Historic Brattonsville, a 775-acre Revolutionary War site, and the Reed Gold Mine. Pan for gold, experience living history and tour plantations and underground tunnels for hands-on fun.

For the animal lover in us all, Historic Latta Plantation includes the Carolina Raptor Center and Latta Equestrian Center while the Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville boasts a 3.5mile safari including 750 animals from around the world. Pack a picnic and make a day of it!

Hiking, fishing, camping and rock climbing are all options at Crowders Mountain and Kings Mountain. If you are more interested in a relaxing leisurely walk through beautifully landscaped gardens and an Orchid Conservatory glass house, visit the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden but remember to leave time for a class in photography, fine art, floral design or other special events.

Closer to home (and still fun on a rainy day) is the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Uptown Charlotte. Fans may also venture out to the Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord for tours of the speedway and a few of the individual race shops.

Time is precious for all of us multi-tasking work, school, parenting, volunteering etc… but finding time to re-charge can be as easy as packing a picnic and taking off with friends and family for a short day trip… in spite of the weather! Enjoy!!
