Public Health
The Master of Public Health is designed to meet the growing demand for public health professionals who have the ability to navigate the complex issues inherent to navigate the complexities of urban and rural communities.
Coursework, integrated practice-based projects, and faculty expertise provide students with real-world opportunities to apply newfound research and evaluation skills to areas including health policy, health technology and informatics, mental health, social justice, urban health, environmental health, and public health leadership and advocacy. The program seeks to train individuals driven by a desire to improve public health at the local, regional, national, and global levels. Graduates leave the program prepared to effectively address the inequities and multi-level public health risks that impact diverse populations.

Program Overview
Northeastern University’s Master of Public Health program is designed to help students master the type of innovative thinking that is needed to confront complex, current public health challenges.
Knowledgeable, professionally educated public health practitioners are in high demand. The program trains graduates to meet that demand by equipping them with the technical expertise necessary to tackle complex urban, rural, and local health problems. Interdisciplinary faculty then pair that technical know-how with the cultural sensitivity required to communicate effectively with, and advocate for, diverse populations, both within the United States and abroad. Students examine how the built environment can affect populations’ wellbeing through the lens of social justice and the social determinants of health.

Unique Features
- Fall and spring entry dates
- Elective courses may be taken on a wide range of public health topics, including cross-departmental offerings from Northeastern’s other colleges (law, business, social sciences, and more)
- Students complete their education in the program with the Capstone, which is the final step in their MPH journey and can take the form of either:

- A project that is designed in consultation with Northeastern faculty and community partners
- Passing the Certified in Public Health (CPH) Exam and completing a comprehensive literature review on a topic of one’s choosing.
- All students give a professional presentation on their Capstone projects or papers to the MPH community.

A graduate from the MPH in Public Health program has both the technical expertise to address complex health issues as well as the strategic and cultural competency needed to interact effectively with and be an advocate for diverse populations. Graduates with an MPH degree are employed in a number of varied professional settings including: federal, state, and local health agencies; universities and colleges; hospitals; ambulatory medical centers; nonprofit organizations; community-based agencies; insurance and pharmaceutical industries; health maintenance organizations; and private foundations.
Program Experience
The Charlotte MPH program is offered as online, asynchronous coursework (meaning classes are taken on the student’s schedule rather than at set times), with a single one-week, in-person course intensive residency. Our Charlotte faculty will work with you to tailor the experience to your goals.

- Transcripts from all institutions attended
- Personal statement that describes your interest in and commitment to urban public health
- Resumé/CV
- TOEFL for applicants who do not hold a degree from a U.S. institution and whose native language is not English
- Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Interview: The Admissions Committee reserves the right to request an in-person or telephone interview with certain candidates

The domestic tuition price is inclusive of a scholarship of up to 25% for all domestic students beginning their graduate studies in the 2025 academic year. This scholarship is not transferable to alternative programs of study, terms or campuses outside of Charlotte, NC.

Coursework, directed studies, and practicum placement provide students with real-world opportunities to apply newfound research and evaluation skills to areas including health policy, mental health, social justice, urban health, rural health, environmental health, and public health leadership and advocacy.
The week-long residency is an opportunity for students to meet their cohort and be immersed into the Charlotte public health community in person. Situated in the heart of the beautiful Southend neighborhood of uptown Charlotte, N.C., students come together for an immersive workshop-style learning, in collaboration with faculty, peers, industry leaders, and the chance to further cultivate professional networks while accumulating tools for health program planning and promotion.
Social Determinants of Health Concentration
The Master of Public Health Program’s concentration in Social Determinants of Health has been developed specifically to meet the growing demand for public health professionals who have the ability to navigate the complex issues inherent to urban, suburban, and rural contexts.
One of the few of its kind, our program brings together interdisciplinary faculty with expertise in working with diverse urban populations and builds upon Northeastern’s rich history of community engagement to provide students with the experience and skills needed to confront complex public health challenges, both current and emerging.
With a focus on racial and ethnic health disparities, students examine how the characteristics of the urban environment can affect health and well-being.
