The Master of Public Health is designed to meet the growing demand for public health professionals who have the ability to navigate the complex issues inherent to navigate the complexities of urban and rural communities.
Coursework, integrated practice based projects, and faculty expertise provide students with real-world opportunities to apply newfound research and evaluation skills to areas including health policy, health technology and informatics, mental health, social justice, urban health, environmental health, and public health leadership and advocacy. The program seeks to train racially and ethnically diverse individuals driven by a desire to improve public health at the local, regional, national, and global levels. Graduates leave the program prepared to effectively address the inequities and multi-level public health risks that impact diverse urban populations.

Program Overview
Northeastern University’s Master of Public Health program is designed to help students master the type of innovative thinking that is needed to confront complex, current public health challenges.
Knowledgeable, professionally educated public health practitioners are in high demand. The program trains graduates to meet that demand by equipping them with the technical expertise necessary to tackle complex urban, rural, and local health problems. Interdisciplinary faculty then pair that technical know-how with the cultural sensitivity required to communicate effectively with, and advocate for, diverse populations, both within the United States and abroad. Students examine how the built environment can affect populations’ wellbeing through the lens of social justice and the social determinants of health.

Unique Features
- Fall and spring entry dates
- Elective courses may be taken on a wide range of public health topics, including cross-departmental offerings from Northeastern’s other colleges (law, business, social sciences, and more)
- Community-oriented, 200-hour practicum takes place in a professional public health setting
- The capstone project allows students to integrate theory and practice experiences in a major research, program planning, policy development, management, service delivery, or evaluation project
- Graduates are eligible to sit for the Certified in Public Health (CPH) Exam, the only professional certification specific to the field of public health.

Graduates with an MPH degree are employed in a number of varied professional settings including: federal, state, and local health agencies; universities and colleges; hospitals; ambulatory medical centers; nonprofit organizations; community-based agencies; insurance and pharmaceutical industries; health maintenance organizations; and private foundations.

In Charlotte’s MPH program, offerings are online or in-person, working for a company or organization, and addressing a particular challenge, project, or topic area. Our Charlotte faculty will work with you to tailor the experience to your goals.

- Three letters of recommendation from academic or professional sources only
- Transcripts from all institutions attended
- Personal statement that describes your interest in and commitment to urban public health
- Resumé/CV
- TOEFL for applicants who do not hold a degree from a U.S. institution and whose native language is not English
- Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Official GRE or MCAT scores (waiver requests are available)
- Interview: The Admissions Committee reserves the right to request an in-person or telephone interview with certain candidates

The domestic tuition price is inclusive of a scholarship of up to 25% for all domestic students beginning their graduate studies in the 2025 academic year. This scholarship is not transferable to alternative programs of study, terms or campuses outside of Charlotte, NC.

Experiential Learning

Your Northeastern education can be a dynamic, transformative experience, giving you countless opportunities to grow as a professional and person.
Students may enroll in elective practicum courses to gain experience in the field under the supervision of Northeastern faculty. These courses are designed to meet the requirements set forth by the BACB for Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork. Faculty supervisors bring a rich array of practical experience in public and private settings. Students enrolled in practicum courses meet twice weekly with their assigned faculty supervisors in group and individual formats. Students who meet the stated requirements in all four practicum courses complete 100% of the fieldwork needed to sit for the BCBA examination. Students who are already employed in a behavior analytic role may be eligible to complete their fieldwork in their current professional setting. Other students may gain assistance from Northeastern faculty in identifying practical settings for fieldwork.
