Sports Leadership Takes Over Charlotte
January is wrapping up to be an exciting month for sports in Charlotte!
Earlier in the month, twenty Master of Sports Leadership (MSL) students from across the country joined in the action by participating in the 2016 Winter Institute at the Charlotte campus. Modeled after the Sports Leadership Summer Institute offered in Boston, the week-long residency sparked thought-provoking and lively in-class discussions, supplemented with guest speakers from the local sports community and tours of Charlotte sports venues.
The group engaged in two courses throughout the week—Sport in Society and Sports Media Relations. With an informative, jam-packed schedule, students were introduced to alumni of the Sports Leadership program and sport industry leaders like Dan Rajkowski, executive vice president and chief operating officer for the Charlotte Knights, and Mark Mensheha, editor of the Sports Business Journal.
Adding extra thrills to their Charlotte experience, students checked out the local sports scene, including attending the Charlotte Checkers and Charlotte Hornets games and visiting the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
“I would recommend this trip to anyone in the program and I hope this continues to be an option for future classes. The guest speakers where extremely informative and seeing a new city was also very cool. We were taken on some great excursions each night where we continued to get to know each other even more. I came out of this week with a list full of industry contacts that I can use for networking purposes whenever the opportunity arises.” ~MSL Student
“The entire Winter Institute week was an excellent opportunity to learn from others and re-energize my interest in working in our profession. I felt each day had meaning and purpose, while also being enjoyable and challenging.” ~MSL Student
