About

Visiting Clinical Professor Gibbie Harris brings her extensive experience as a health director and leader to Northeastern University’s Charlotte campus. Harris has more than 40 years of experience in public health, offering students her real-world insight into the complex issues inherent in improving health outcomes across entire communities.

Over the course of her career, she served as public health director for Buncombe, Wake, Caldwell, and Mecklenburg counties. In addition to her work leading Mecklenburg County’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Harris offers a unique perspective on models for providing public health services, including innovative ways to address social determinants of health.

Harris offers students her deep knowledge of clinical services, preventive health, case management, health partnerships, and population health. She is a leader in her community, leveraging her experience and expertise to address barriers to lifelong health, and has been recognized at the state and national levels. During her tenure as health director for Buncombe County, the county was recognized by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation with a Culture of Health Prize. Harris has also been awarded North Carolina’s highest honor, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
